I'm not a fan of the blue painter's tape. I use a product called Trakk tape from
http://www.trakktape.com/ and it works very well. Its thick enough to protect the car and it is clear and barely shows on camera which can be easily photoshopped out if necessary.
Taped the hood and front bumper. The headlights seem to be pretty scratch resistant.
