This counter is probably used to determine the number of pages based on how many posts per page you have set in your settings (e.g. 20/page). My theory is that this counter didn't get updated during some sort of purging of the posts (i.e. moved or deleted). So the pager is based on X number of posts, when there are really Y posts remaining.
Thanks for the explanation. Have little knowledge of how these things work so I learned something today

Oh, and there were a few new posts today, and now the page goes up to 51 total, instead of 57. I guess that somehow fixed the issue.
