if it were up to me, i'd be by the beach. but SM-DT doesn't sound feasible. my hours are long and i don't want to spend what little free time i do have grinding it out through traffic.
Re: SM-DT, if you commute early in the morning, and come back late (i.e. before & after regular commute traffic), it might not be bad. Plus, you have multiple routes to choose from - Olympic Blvd, I-10, Wilshire Blvd, Pico Blvd, Venice Blvd, etc.
Re: South Pasadena, that's a nice quiet suburb, very close to DT, and intentionally kept in 'old town' atmosphere (lots of 50's style Crossman homes there).
Also, although DTLA has for a long while been a dump unsuited for residential dwelling, developments there during past 5 years have resulted in many people living there now (including a member on this forum). Can't beat a 5 minute commute.
Plus, there are lots of active commercial/sports development plans that'll, within next few years, really further liven up the area.
