"The above quote consists of two excerpts from a long speech delivered by Barack Obama during a Senate debate over raising the national debt limit on March 16, 2006. Along with his entire party, Senator Obama voted against the increase, which passed nonetheless with overwhelming Republican support."

It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.
So really, this was not just an Obama flip-flop, this was a wholesale reversal of today's situation by the entire democratic congress and republican congress. You left out that crucial fact, either by deception or ignorance.
The more relevant question is, why did the repubs embrace it then, when now they act like it's only irresponsible dems who support debt ceiling increases? Could it be perhaps that the party in power understands the necessary evil of raising it, whereas the other side can act all righteous and wash their hands of it? So instead of blaming one side, just chalk it up to an undesirable necessity of government, and move on.
